CICAIR have been busy lately removing Celtech’s Approved Inspector licence and now Campagna.
Staff at the latter have said how they were told in a staff meeting that the licence had gone and the owner was retiring. Calls to the Welsh company are met with statements they are not carrying out any new work.
The owner has announced he is retiring and apparently has headed to sunny climes for a couple of weeks.
The whole affair is bad for AIs, bad for the profession but most of all for those customers left in the lurch with projects half-built and no BC inspector. Work will now revert to the LA and we all know they’ll already be too pushed to deal with this new work.
It could be handled by existing AIs if their Professional Indemnity allowed it.
It could be dealt with sensibly with a few changes in legislation to allow AIs to assist the LA. Why not? They could be covered by the LA for PI and it could be a win-win.
Perhaps LABC have kept quiet on this and other AIs losing their licences of late because they realise that CICAIR are doing their job and culling the weaker and less competent. LABC can hardly complain when they themselves are not under any scrutiny. That said it doesn’t stop them banging the drum that Assent dropped a clanger in Luton, but remind us all : How many dead and injured? Rumours abound that one of Luton’s staff is an AI. Errrrrrr.
Maybe, just maybe, LABC’ll be wondering how they’ll react when the BSR rolls up at <insert council name here> Town Hall and a 22-year-old beams at them “Hi, I’m the Head of Building Control.”
“Hello, pleased to meet you. Are you alone?” says the BSR, with a small laugh.
“Oh no, we have a whole team for you to meet.” says the HBC pointing to a collection of desks and filing cabinets. “Brian here has been in Building Control since he left school and retires next year. This is Suzy and she’s our trainee.”
“Great – where are the rest?” asks the BSR.
“This is it.” says the young man.
